About Dr. GumbsDr. John Gumbs founded Global Veterinary Services. He graduated from Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1982, interned at Tuskegee the following year, and completed his residency at Michigan State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1986. Dr. Gumbs then joined Professional Veterinary Hospitals (PVH), which was the largest group of small animal practices in the state of Michigan. There, he helped set up the first surgical referral service outside of the university setting within the 13 plus small animal clinics owned and operated by PVH. The venture was a success as more than 100 clinics referred patients to this referral service. Business boomed, and many clients wrote thank-you letters to him for the kind manners expressed towards them and their pets. Even after experiencing the tremendous growth and success at PVH, Dr. Gumbs decided to join MIchigan Veterinary Specialists in Southfield. There he was staff surgeon and performed over 4000 cruciate ligament repairs, 3700 disc surgeries, 2468 fracture repairs, 30 gall bladder removals, 27 open heart surgeries to remove heartworms in cats, 698 gastric dilation volvulus procedures, and countless elective orthopedic procedures such as OCD, FCP's, UAP, angular limb deformity and luxation repairs, and total hip replacement surgeries.
In 1997 Dr. Gumbs chose to start his own business, Global Veterinary Services, and he travels all over the southeast portion of the state! He continues to operate 20 plus cruciate ligament repairs weekly, fracture cases, total hips, and has added the TPLO procedure to his list of surgical services.
Dr. Gumbs lives in a suburb of Ann Arbor with his wife, daughter and stepson, two Leonberger's, and a new horse.
